Cyclocross is a form of bike racing that challenges competitors to navigate round a course of road, gravel, fields, woodland and man-made obstacles that will require most people to shoulder their bike and run. The course is designed to test rider’s fitness, bike handling skills and tolerance for excessive quantities of mud. To meet the demands of such a mish mash of disciplines you will need a versatile ‘jack of all trades’ type of bike. Cross bikes first need to be lightweight and efficient so they are based on strengthened road bike frames with mtb style extras such as knobbly tyres, smaller chain rings, disc brakes, extra mud clearance and mtb clips and pedals. All features that are better suited to dealing with mud. When they are not racing CX bikes double up as excellent commuter bikes opening alternative options for an off road route to work.
