Cross country (XC)
These big burly bikes are made for one purpose, to get to the bottom of the hill as fast as possible. They are full suspension mountain bikes usually with around 200mm of travel, instantly recognisable by their double crown forks that continue alongside the headtube. Downhill tracks are the most extreme kind of riding featuring big doubles, road gaps, huge drops, very steep rough sections and rock gardens galore. In order to cope with this kind of abuse these bikes are made with only the most durable components, sacrificing weight for reliability under heavy battering. They are also equipped with high end brakes and larger 203mm rotors. Their weight, uber slack geometry and 7 speed cassette gearing do mean climbing isn’t really an option but as pedalling is not a great focus of the gravity orientated rider there isn’t usually too many complaints about jumping on an uplift.
