Fixies (Singlespeed)

Fixed gear bikes have experienced a reincarnation thanks to the bike couriers of London who finding themselves reliant on the dependability of their bikes for an income concluded that the less parts the better. Affectionately known as fixies these bikes are singlespeed and in their true form do not freewheel as the drivetrain cog is bolted directly to the hub of the back wheel. This means each pedal stroke creates one spin of the wheel either forward or back. This is believed to be part of the appeal of the bike as you are much more attached to every movement of it. It also enables riders to work on their pedal stroke and perform some epic track stands or even pedal backwards. All fixed gear bikes should come with a front break though many die-hard fans will ride with none using the back stroke of the pedal stroke to stop. Higher end bikes will come with a ‘flip flop hub’ which allows you to change over to a singlespeed set up that allows freewheeling.
